News

8/2/2008 - Check out the new additions, the Tim's Picks carousel is pretty cool. Also updated some artist websites and added some links to buy music online.

7/28/2008 - Fixed a bug in the song list when switching stations. It should work much better now!

7/17/2008 - Due to popular request I have removed some of the Al Di Meola songs from the playlist, mostly the electric stuff. I left the World Sinfonia and some acoustic singles such as Mediterranean Sundance, which is *the* song that introduced me to flamenco in the first place, it just wouldn't be the same without it! After all, that is Paco playing with him...

7/15/2008 - Sorry I've been such a slacker lately, I've been busy with work trying to get ahead all year as I'm sure everyone else is as well. I just approved a bunch of comments that I haven't had time to go through, and I promise I will add some new CDs to the playlist very soon. If you hear of a new CD being released please post it in the Comments section and I'll check it out.

7/15/2008 - Thought I'd share some links to Flamenco sites that I visit and some of my personal friends in El Mundo del Flamenco:

Jose Tanaka, guitarist
Jason McGuire, guitarist
Melissa Cruz, dancer
David McLean, guitarist
San Francisco Flamenco, events
Alegria Restaurant, shows
Thirsty Bear Restaurant & Brewery, shows
Flametal, fusion
flamenco-world.com, shopping

9/19/2007 - Added a Google Gadget! If you have a personalized Google homepage (www.google.com/ig) then just click on "Add Stuff", click "Add by URL", and enter "http://timsradio.com/radio_gadget.aspx". You can also select which station to display by modifying the settings.

9/9/2007 - Added artist web site links today, if anyone has the web site URL for an artist you hear, let me know and I'll add the link!

8/28/2007 - Check out the new redesign, I get a lot of great emails from people so I thought I'd post them on the front page. I may turn it into a full blown discussion board if there's enough interest, so post your comments and I'll approve them to appear on the home page as soon as I can!

4/2/2007 - Just realized that the comments form had an error. It's fixed now! Sorry about that, the site pretty much runs itself these days. Feel free to send in your comments!

10/24/2005 - Went on an online shopping spree and bought 4 new CDs, some new, some classics that I had not yet purchased. Enjoy!

10/18/2005 - Loaded 2 more CDs to the playlist, Gerardo Nunez' 1992 CD Flamencos en Nueva York and Jose Merce's Lio fro 2002. Both are good albums, Gerardo is always amazing and Jose's album is pretty good. Not as good as Del Amanecer, but I need to pick up his latest, Confi de Fua. I only have one song from it, Clandestino, but it's awesome. You might hear it if you listen long enough...

10/16/2005 - Finally got the Song History back, something to do with Shoutcast, plugins, and multiple IP addresses.

10/8/2005 - Got a new PocketPC cell phone, now you can listen to flamenco anywhere, anytime with the free GSPlayer. Once you've installed GSPlayer, go to File, Open URL, and type in http://flamencoradio.net. I've added auto-detection for Winamp and GSPlayer so you don't need the port number, it will redirect to the stream using the web URL. All you need is an audio cable connected to the auxiliary input of your car stereo, and you can listen to the stream just like a regular radio station! Of course headphones work great too. I don't know what happened to the song list, I'm working on getting that back...

8/16/2005 - Went live with the auto-hyperlinking system today, it works OK but there are a few improvements I'm working on such as album art and better search results. In case you didn't notice, the current and previous songs are now links to Amazon, sometimes directly to the CD's product page! Some of the links will return Amazon's "we were unable to find exact matches for your search" page, this will get better over time.

4/14/2005 - I finally got Vicente Amigo's new CD, "Un Momento en el Sonido". I had to order it from friggin Spain for $25 cause NO ONE has it here. I called Tower Records, Virgin, Borders, even some smaller specialty record stores and none of them even could find a new CD from Vicente in their stupid computers. Luckily flamenco-world.com had it and they ship pretty quick even from half way around the world. I also picked up Tomatito's latest (2004) while I was there. I'll be queuing them up when I'm listening so you'll hear them more often!

1/1/2005 -

Welcome to Tim's Radio, flamencoradio.net, mostly Flamenco with some Fusion & World music. If you have any requests please let me know. I am currently taking Flamenco guitar lessons from Jose Tanaka, if you live in Southern California, go see him in Long Beach on the weekends or take some lessons from him.

I don't play much "Nouveau Flamenco" here, if you're looking for Ottmar Liebert clones then go somewhere else. I mean come on, "nouveau" is a French word! Here you will find real Flamenco artists like Paco de Lucia, Sabicas, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito, Gerardo Nunez, Jose Tanaka, and non-Flamenco yet very talented artists like Al di Meola and Strunz & Farah. I also like the Gipsy Kings, they may play mostly rumbas but you gotta admit, they have some really good songs. However I don't know every single artist, if you know of one I'm missing please let me know and I'll do my best to add them to the playlist.

Requirements

If you click the "TUNE IN!" button and get a prompt to save a file, you don't have a player installed. Install one the following players and it should start playing as soon as you click "TUNE IN!".

NULLSOFT WINAMP
You'll need Winamp to listen. Click the logo to download it, it's FREE.
Don't be fooled by the "Buy Pro version" ads, Winamp IS FREE.

  • Windows users should use Winamp or VLC Media Player .
  • Mac users should use VLC Media Player , Audion , or iTunes .
  • Linux/X Windows users should use VLC Media Player  or XMMS .
  • The Apple iTunes player seems to work pretty well too, on Mac and Windows platforms.
  • Musicmatch works OK but doesn't seem to display the realtime track info.
  • VLC Media Player is a pretty awesome multi-platform player, it can read just about anything and if they don't have a version for your OS, you can compile it yourself .
  • Windows Media Player can't read .pls files, so you have to click a special link to listen to Shoutcast streams. What's up with that?
  • You'll also need an internet connection faster than 96 kbps. If you're trying to listen to Internet Radio over a dialup connection, you have much bigger problems than just bandwidth...

Firewalls: most people won't need to do anything but if your firewall is very restrictive and blocks outbound access, you will need to open TCP port 8100 outbound (ex.: src= LAN, dest= WAN, port= 8100, protocol=TCP).

I have just tuned in to ... 'Manitas de Platas' and his 'Flaming Flamenco' it is so chaotic and off compás it is bringing tears to my eyes ... What about replacing him with ANY of the following: Paco Cepero, Pedro Bacan, Paco del Gastor or Melchor de Marchena ...por favor hombre!

Ha ha ha, that's funny! He's there for comic relief, maybe I'll put on some Esteban too so you can have a good laugh! I'll remove some of his really bad tracks so you can stop crying...--TIM

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your suggestions; I used to live in Maastricht, NL and recently moved back to my native east bay. During the six years I was away, the flamenco scene has developed a lot. I discovered that Jason McGuire lives nearby along with a couple of other great flamenco guitarists, all right here in the east bay!

I also have a request: "Camaron Nuestro" a double CD live album. I have not noticed it on your play list. It is the most awesome recording of Camaron de la Isla I have ever heard. I was blown away when I first heard it.

Sounds like a winner, I'll see if I can pick it up on my next CD run. Thanks for listening! --TIM

Really enjoying your new additons to the playlist - please could you give some info on a bulerias called 'Fiesta en Jerez'(I think) it lasted about 20m. various singers sounded like Manuel Sordera 'Soto'; Chocolate(?)Perrete, Terremotto maybe.
Thanks

You're probably talking about Jerez Fiesta & Cante Jondo and the artists are listed as Antonio de la Malena, Mijita Hijo, El Barullo, El Chico, El Torta, and Manuel Moneo. It's a 32 minute song! --TIM

Hi,

I'm glad I can listen flamenco during my working hours...
Your site and choice bacome a certain pointer to new flamenco styles...
Where can I find info about you who are making playlists? Are you flamenco players, as well?

Best regards,

Maja

Thanks, the playlist is just my entire library of flamenco and fusion, it's on shuffle. I do play guitar and someday hope to play regular shows with dancers and singers! Thanks for listening, --TIM

Subject: Great Site!
Just wanted to say great site! I just found your site and I already like the fact that you listen to what your listeners have to say. One suggestion... create an mms link for listening on PocketPCs/ Smartphones. I would love to listen to this while working out!

Thanks for listening! Unfortunately Windows Media Player on the Pocket PC can't play shoutcast streams but you can download GSPlayer for PPC which will play it. Once it's installed, go to Menu, File, Open URL, http://flamencoradio.net:8100 and enjoy! --TIM
